Not For Love

To claim that the death of Jesus on the Cross is an act of love, even the ultimate expression of love, is to diminish this supreme act of God.  God does indeed love humanity, but God’s love for us is neither the goal nor the purpose of the Cross.  Jesus did not die simply because God does love us, or so that he could love us.  Rather, Jesus died so that we could be saved.

Love is not the end — atonement and salvation are.  God is a God of love, but much more, he is a God of justice.  For the Christian, the Cross is not an act of love, it is the instrument of salvation.
